PROJECT SUMMARY
The Beeland Project - Beekeeping and Pollination: Impact on the Biodiversity and Sustainability of the Territories aims to characterise, assess and objectify the value of the ecosystem services provided by bees and beekeeping, valuing their contribution to the sustainability and resilience of territories.
It aims to develop a set of outputs capable of strengthening the beekeeping activity and associated services. The first activity of the project consists in characterizing the socio-economic impact of pollination by bees in the territories of the 9 Portuguese Honey PDO. The aim is to:
(1) objectify the contribution of beekeeping to the environment, quantifying and qualifying its impact;
(2) to systematise information on the impact of bee pollination on agriculture (horticultural, oleaginous and cereal crops), forestry (scrubland and fallow land, natural and planted forests, and agro-sylvo-pastoral systems).
Its strategic operational objectives are:
- Promote the sustainable use of soil, water and biodiversity;
- To promote the services of agricultural and agroforestry ecosystems;
- To maintain and increase the agricultural areas in the agroforestry territories most vulnerable to the risk of rural fires;
- Promote the sustainability of agriculture and extensive livestock farming;
