PROJECT SUMMARY

The S4agro project – Sustainable solutions for the agro-industrial sector has as main objective to qualify The SMEs of the agro-industrial sector, namely the ranks of meat products, fruit, dairy and bakery products, for the adoption of innovative and sustainable solutions, which allow to increase their productivity, effectiveness and efficiency at the level of industry 4.0 and circular economy.

S4agro intends to create and make available to companies, freely and universally, a set of innovative tools, knowledge and information in the fields of eco-design, eco-efficiency and reduction and recovery of waste, cybersecurity and marketing to support SMEs in the agro-industrial sector in the qualification of their business strategies, supporting companies in the adoption of innovative practices in the field of industry 4.0 and circular economy.

Responding to the market failures identified in the diagnosis and taking into account the critical success factors for the agri-food sector of the North, Central and Alentejo regions considered, S4AGRO refers to 4 main guiding lines of the integrated approach of the project:

  • Environmental sustainability – innovate to accelerate the introduction of less resource-intensive products and production processes, in this case for the packaging segment of agri-food products, including recyclable or reusable materials capable of extending the life cycle of products. The active and/or smart packaging aspect can also make contributions to this line of work;
  • Safeguarding resources – promoting waste reduction policies and studying and disseminating innovative ways of valuing by-products and waste in the agri-food industry and encouraging new innovation dynamics by boosting models for generating new products resulting from co-creation processes between companies, clusters and R&I entities.
  • Process security – act to accelerate the inclusion of companies in the digital economy by empowering cybersecurity (cybersecurity) procedures that reduce the risks associated with the use of new business models supported in advanced information systems, promoting the safe use of Information and Communication & Electronic Technologies (ICTE) and thereby fostering the adoption of Industry 4.0. smes. The traceability provided by the use of intelligent packaging, enhances the consumer's knowledge about the origin, authenticity, and history of the food product along the cold chain, which is one of the future trends.
  • Economic sustainability – supporting companies in the progression of their value chain, adding value to products based on inmaterial competitiveness factors associated with environmentally sustainable production practices, through training for the definition of strategies and effective use of marketing and communication tools capable of influencing the purchasing decision of the most sophisticated customers and valuing these factors.

It comprises the following activities:

  • How to use eco-friendly packaging in the primary packaging of agri-food products? - Study and dissemination of good international practices in sustainable packaging;
  • How can we be more sustainable in the packaging and logistics of agri-food products? - Study and dissemination of good practices in sustainable packaging (recyclable or reusable) and associated logistics for the agri-food sector;
  • How to efficiently use smart and/or active packaging in agri-food products? - Study of good international practices in smart packaging for the agri-food sector;
  • How to make your company's digital environment more secure? - Study and dissemination of good practices in cybersecurity in the agro-industrial sector;
  • How to reduce and value waste in order to improve productive efficiency and reduce environmental impacts;
  • How to improve the capacity of innovation based on scientific and technological in SMEs in the agro-industrial sector? -Promotion of innovative scientific and technological activities for the progression of agro-industrial SMEs in their value chain;
  • How to improve the marketing of the company to be recognized and valued by the end customer as an environmentally friendly brand;
