In 1994 a small group of farmers and agricultural entrepreneurs, motivated by the signs of Europe, concerned about environmental problems and food safety, created AAPIM based on a new paradigm of technical assistance through new modes of production (PRODI and Organic Farming). Today it is an association of national reference and positively responsible for the technical and environmental evolution of farmers and the competitiveness of their farms.

APABI - Associação de Produtores de Azeite da Beira Interior (Association of Olive Oil Producers from the Beira Interior Region) represents the interests of olive oil producers from the districts of Castelo Branco, Guarda and the municipality of Mação, and its main goals are: the dynamization and organization of the olive oil sector, the fostering of the production of superior quality olive oils and the promotion and dissemination of the olive oils of the region.

APABI is an organization of olive oil producers which includes 45 mills, corresponding to a representation of 7000 olive growers, and 63 individual olive growers, being the managing entity of the Protected Designation of Origin Azeites da Beira Interior (Azeite da Beira Alta e Azeite da Beira Baixa) PDO. Currently, it represents about 60% of all olive oil produced in Beira Interior and the totality of the olive oil qualified as PDO, distributed by about 12 producers/packers, representing about 19 commercial brands.

Being Beira Interior a rural region by excellence, where agriculture is the main vector of the economical activity, it acquired along the years some problems inherent to the developed activities that aroused the environmental conscience of some farmers and technicians of the region in the sense of creating an association that would aim the intransigent defence of the environment, at the same time that would give an effective support to the intervenients of the productive sector, in the sense of obtaining high quality food, associated to techniques in which the exploitation of the natural resources was promoted. Appizêzere was thus created from the will of some farmers and technicians to carry out the practice of Integrated Protection; having a national scope, it was in the districts of Castelo Branco, Santarém and Portalegre that it always focused its activity.
